Comparison

Order Local vs Hotplate

Two differences decide it. On Hotplate the shopper is typically charged a 5% + $0.55 platform fee at checkout — about 9.1% on a $13 order — while Order Local adds no surcharge and charges the shop a flat monthly fee based on sales ($0 under $250, capped at $79). And Hotplate stops at the preorder: Order Local's Market Mode rings up the booth from your phone too.

The honest part

Where Hotplate is the better choice

Hotplate is genuinely good at something Order Local does not do, and its pricing model is better than ours in one specific situation.

You run drops, not a weekly schedule

Hotplate is built for the timed-release model — a drop opens, it sells out, there is a waitlist. Order Local has no drop or waitlist mechanic; the closest equivalent is a per-day cap that flips an item to sold out.

You sell rarely and want zero fixed cost

If you do two sales a year, a $0 subscription genuinely beats any monthly fee. Hotplate only costs you anything when an order happens — there is no bill in the months you do not sell.

You are comfortable passing the fee to customers

Hotplate has no monthly subscription, and its 5% + $0.55 per-order fee can be passed to the customer. If your customers accept that, your own out-of-pocket cost can be very low.

The other side

Where Order Local is the better choice

The comparison turns on two things: how often you sell, and whether you want a fee visible on your customer’s total.

Your drop schedule AND your market table

Hotplate is built around drops and preorders. Order Local covers the in-person half too — Market Mode turns your phone into a booth register: pick the items, show a checkout QR code, and the customer pays on their phone. Market-day sales share the catalog, customer list, and analytics with your preorder shop.

Nothing is added to your customer’s total

Order Local adds no platform surcharge at checkout. The customer pays your listed price, and Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 comes out of your side — never added on top of what the customer sees.

Your customers never pay a checkout fee

On a $13 Hotplate order, the shopper typically pays about $1.20 extra — 9.1% on top of your price. On Order Local, checkout shows your price and nothing else. For a small order, that difference is what the customer remembers.

Ongoing pickup operations, not just drops

Multiple pickup locations with their own recurring hours and timezones, bookable windows, cutoff times, per-item lead times, and daily caps. Built for a standing Saturday market or a Friday shop pickup, not only a release day.

Your own Stripe account holds the money

Payments go into your Stripe account on its normal schedule — Order Local is never in the middle of your funds. Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, and cash at pickup work too, paid to you directly with the order still tracked in your dashboard.

Regulars can subscribe

Sell recurring items — a weekly bread share, a monthly box — billed automatically, alongside a standing pickup schedule. Subscriptions are included for every shop, which a drop-only model has no equivalent for.

How to switch

Switching from Hotplate

You can test Order Local against a single pickup day before you move anything permanently — nothing has to happen at once.

1

Rebuild your list as standing items

Add the items you sell with photos, prices, and modifiers for size, flavor, or variant. A one-off release is just an item with a cap and a single pickup date.

2

Turn drop quantities into caps and hours

Add a pickup spot with its hours, then set a per-day cap on each item for the number you can actually make. When a day fills, the item shows sold out for that date.

3

Connect Stripe and run one pickup day

Connect your own Stripe account and share the link for a single pickup day. Compare the totals on your side and your customers’ side before you move the rest.
